The goal is to bring the boy and girl to the destination together in every level. When one character cannot overcome an obstacle alone, you can switch to the other and use that character as a platform to jump higher. This role-switching mechanic requires you to keep track of both characters and think carefully before making each move.
The journey of helping the boy and girl find each other also gives Heart Star a gentle romantic touch. Both characters must support one another to overcome difficulties, much like couples accompanying each other through a relationship. Although it is not a two-player game, couples can still watch together, discuss solutions, and take turns completing each level.
In addition to its puzzle-platforming gameplay, Heart Star features a classic pixel art style. The two characters, platforms, and obstacles use distinct colors, making it easy to identify each character’s role and position throughout the levels.
