Description

Some games only need a horizontal bar, a ball, and a few falling blocks to keep you locked in. Slide Ball on Woko Games, from FBG Network, is exactly that kind of game. A white ball moves along a horizontal line while geometric obstacles keep dropping from above. Your job is simple: stay out of their way for as long as you can.

The rules of Slide Ball make sense almost immediately. The ball can only move left and right along the bar in the middle of the screen, so there is not much room to recover from a bad move. When a white block starts falling, you need to slide the ball out of the way before it reaches you. It sounds easy, but once several objects start dropping in different spots, finding the safe side gets tricky fast.

I like that Slide Ball does not waste time with a long tutorial. You see the ball, you see the obstacles, and you pretty much know what to do. It works well as a quick game when you only have a few minutes, but it is also easy to end up playing several rounds because every loss feels like you could have survived just a little longer.

Your score sits right in the middle of the screen and keeps climbing as long as you stay alive. One gameplay screen shows a score of 59, while the Game Over screen shows a New Record of 87. So Slide Ball is not about reaching a final level. It is about pushing that number a little higher every time you play.

The part that caught me out most was judging the space between falling blocks. Sometimes the left side looks completely safe, then another obstacle drops straight into that gap a moment later. If you change direction too late, the ball may not have enough room to escape. Because of that, Slide Ball is less about reacting at the last second and more about watching what is coming from above.

The graphics in Slide Ball are extremely simple. A bright red background fills most of the screen, the white ball sits on a dark horizontal bar, and the falling white shapes are easy to spot. A blue circle also appears near the top of the gameplay screen. I think the limited color palette works well because there is almost nothing on screen to distract you from the obstacles.

The movement is easy to follow too. The ball leaves a short trail of small dots behind it as it slides, which makes its direction clear. In a game where one bad move can end the run, little visual cues like that are more useful than a busy background.

The Game Over screen in Slide Ball gets straight to the point. It tells you the run is over, shows New Record if you beat your best score, and puts the final number right in the center. There is not much standing between you and another attempt. If you just lost at 87, it is hard not to think that 90 is probably only one more run away.

The longer I played, the less I watched the ball itself. Instead, I started looking higher up the screen and trying to read where the next blocks were going to fall. That is when Slide Ball gets more interesting. You are not just dodging what is already close to you. You are trying to get ready for what is coming next. An empty side now may not stay empty for long.

Slide Ball on Woko Games is a compact arcade game with simple rules and just enough difficulty to make another run tempting. Move at the right moment, dodge one more block, and keep the score climbing. And if your New Record stays stuck at 87 for too long, maybe the game is not the problem. Maybe you just changed direction one time too many.

Instructions
