description Description

There is something uncomfortable about walking through a dark dungeon when you cannot see what is waiting around the next corner. Prisoner of the Dungeon on Woko Games puts you in that situation right away. You are a prisoner looking for a way out, with a health bar that can disappear pretty quickly if you make the wrong move.

You move through the dungeon using the arrows on the screen. The view stays focused on the hallway ahead, so you never get a full look at the entire route. I like that uncertainty. Turning into a new passage always feels like a small risk because you do not know what will show up next.

Food becomes surprisingly important once your health starts dropping. Fruit gives you points and restores a little health, while hearts help refill your life. At first I was mostly paying attention to the score. After taking some damage, though, every healing item suddenly looked a lot more valuable.

Monsters are what you really need to watch out for. Running into them lowers your health, and once the red bar is gone, the run is over. That makes wandering around without thinking a bad idea. Sometimes moving forward feels worth the risk. Other times, seeing danger ahead makes you wish you had picked another direction.

The score sits in the lower corner and keeps climbing as you make progress. I found myself watching it more once I had survived for a while. A run can start quietly, then turn tense very quickly when your health is low and the next useful item still has not appeared.

The dungeon also has a strange look that I ended up liking. The dark walls are covered in noisy red, blue, purple, and orange colors, almost like the whole place is glitching. It does not look like a normal medieval dungeon, and that actually helps. The distorted colors make the corridors feel even less welcoming.

There is not much standing between you and the game itself. No upgrade screen, no long setup, and no complicated controls. Move, grab useful items, avoid monsters, and try to stay alive while looking for the way out.

After a while, every turn starts feeling like a tiny gamble. Fruit could be waiting ahead. Maybe a heart. Maybe something that takes another chunk out of your health. That is what I like most about Prisoner of the Dungeon: it gets a surprising amount of tension out of a dark corridor and a shrinking red bar.
