Description

Welcome to Berlin!

A whistle goes off, the guard and his dog are right behind you, and the only way out is straight down the tracks. Trains fill the lanes, coins stretch into the distance, and one bad move can end everything in seconds. Subway Surfers Berlin on Woko Games brings the familiar Subway Surfers chase to Berlin without messing with the formula that made the series work in the first place.

There is no finish line here. Jake keeps running until you hit something hard enough for the guard to catch up. The farther you get, the faster the game moves, so a gap between two trains that looked comfortable a minute ago can suddenly feel tiny. That is probably my favorite thing about the endless-runner setup. The rules never really change, but your reaction time has to.

Jake is ready from the start. He runs automatically while you handle the lane changes, jumps, and slides. Coins are spread across all three tracks, and the game is very good at placing them exactly where they can get you into trouble. I lost more than one decent run because I followed a neat line of coins and noticed the train at the end a little too late.

Berlin gives the run a different backdrop without getting in the way. Colorful buildings sit close to the railway, cables hang overhead, graffiti covers parts of the city, and trains keep rolling through the narrow streets. There is plenty happening on screen, but I never had much trouble telling a barrier from a coin or spotting a train coming toward me. Once the speed gets high, that matters a lot.

The real grind starts when you open the Characters menu. Jake is free, but the rest take some saving. Lucy costs 7,000 coins, Robot 12,000, Ninja 20,000, Tasha 30,000, and Frank 40,000. King jumps to 80,000, Zoe costs 120,000, Frizzy 150,000, Brody 350,000, and Prince K sits all the way up at 980,000 coins. Prince K is not something you unlock by accident.

Fresh, Spike, and Yutani work a little differently. Fresh needs 50 Radios, Spike needs 200 Guitars, and Yutani needs 500 UFOs. That breaks up the usual coin grind nicely. Instead of always watching the same currency number go up, you sometimes have a completely different collectible to chase.

The board collection can eat just as many coins. Hoverboard is available from the start, while Lumberjack costs 1,500, Superhero 3,200, Sunset 4,800, Great White 17,000, Monster 25,000, Scoot 30,000, and Freestylker 38,000. From there, prices climb fast: Skull Fire is 65,000, Daredevil 75,000, Teleporter 190,000, Hot Rod and Bouncer 240,000 each, Lowrider 270,000, and Windglider 300,000.

At least the boards do not all feel like simple color swaps. Great White, for example, looks like a shark under Jake’s feet, while some of the other designs go in completely different directions. After staring at the same tracks for a long session, switching to a strange board actually does make the next run feel a little fresher.

There are smaller things to spend coins on too. The Single Use menu shows a Hoverboard for 300 coins, a Mystery Box for 500, Headstart for 2,000, and Score Booster for 3,000. I ignored most of these at first. Once I started caring about my high score, though, Headstart and Score Booster became a lot harder to overlook.

The Awards menu gives you another reason to change how you play. Straight Ahead asks for 45,000 points without changing lanes, which sounds simple until you remember that changing lanes is basically muscle memory in Subway Surfers. Super Mystery Maestro asks you to open 10 Super Mystery Boxes. These challenges are a nice break from simply trying to survive for another thirty seconds.

There is also a High Scores board if beating your own record is not enough. Seeing a list of bigger numbers has a funny way of making a failed run feel unfinished. You tell yourself you are done, notice the next score above yours, and suddenly you are back on the tracks.

The collection can grow beyond what is already in the menus as well. Seasonal events and holidays such as Christmas or Halloween may add more characters, outfits, or boards. That fits Subway Surfers pretty well. Part of the fun has always been seeing what turns up next, not just running the same route forever.

Once the speed really kicks in, most of those menus disappear from your mind anyway. You are just watching the next few meters of track, reacting to trains and barriers almost on instinct. A clean jump over an obstacle, followed by a landing straight into a line of coins, still feels good even after you have done it dozens of times.

Subway Surfers Berlin on Woko Games is still Subway Surfers at heart: Jake runs, the guard chases, coins tempt you into bad decisions, and trains somehow appear exactly when you get too confident. Berlin gives the run a fresh setting, while the characters, boards, boosters, and awards give you plenty to work toward between attempts. And if you are saving 980,000 coins for Prince K, maybe skip those three risky coins sitting in front of the train. He is expensive enough already.
