description Description

With his white lab coat, safety goggles, and a backpack full of equipment, the main character looks ready to head into a laboratory, until you notice the oversized gun and the robots he’s running toward. Agent Action on Woko Games puts this grinning scientist into an HTML5 game that combines side-scrolling shooting with obstacle running. As he moves forward, you handle the jumps, deal with enemies, and try to keep the run going for as long as possible. He certainly brought enough equipment, but how far he gets depends on the person at the keyboard.

You use Z to jump and X to shoot, so getting started takes very little effort, although coordinating those inputs requires some concentration. When the path ahead is clear, you can watch the clusters of golden collectibles and line up a jump to grab them; once an obstacle appears, your attention needs to shift to the gap between your character and the hazard. The keys sit next to each other, which makes the controls comfortable, but waiting until something is practically under his feet leaves you scrambling. Looking a little farther ahead gives you time to decide whether to jump, shoot, or do both, instead of leaving your fingers to sort things out at the last second.

The red blocks covered in yellow spikes stand out against the stone path, and when they’re stacked into a column, you also need to judge whether your jump will clear the spikes at the top. Your first instinct might be to jump as soon as you spot an obstacle, but taking off too early can leave you landing on the very thing you were trying to avoid, while waiting too long gives you little room to recover. Before pressing Z, check both the obstacle and the stretch of ground beyond it so you have somewhere safe to land. The scientist’s gun might look impressive, but it’s still your job to get him over a spike column in one piece.

Shooting gives you another job to juggle, because while you’re pressing X to deal with enemies ahead, you still need to watch the approaching terrain. Focus too long on a target and you can miss the next obstacle; concentrate entirely on jumping and you may be slow to attack. When the timing comes together, there’s a satisfying rhythm to recognizing a threat, choosing the right input, and carrying on without a frantic scramble. That rhythm can fall apart if you get caught up in one task, especially just after clearing an obstacle and deciding you’ve earned a moment to relax.

Clusters of golden collectibles float at different heights, giving you another reason to jump, while a counter in the corner tracks how many you’ve picked up. When a cluster looks within reach, it’s tempting to go for the whole lot, but where you’ll land matters more than the shiny objects ahead. A jump that collects everything only feels like a good move if the scientist can keep running safely afterward. Sometimes you’re better off letting a cluster go and watching the spike column instead, even if leaving those collectibles behind stings a little. He’s already carrying plenty of gear, so he probably doesn’t need to grab everything else at any cost.

Three hearts beside the character portrait let you keep track of his health, although it’s easy to overlook that corner while you’re busy jumping and shooting, then glance up and realize the number has dropped. With only one heart left, ordinary stretches of the path suddenly deserve a closer look, and another jump for collectibles becomes a decision worth reconsidering. The funny part is that his portrait remains cheerfully unconcerned while you start worrying about every button press. You’re trying to keep him alive long enough to continue, but that grin suggests the trip is going exactly as planned and you’re the only one getting worked up.

The nighttime setting, bright moon, and layers of dark rocky mountains provide a clear backdrop for the scientist’s white coat, while the red spike columns and golden collectibles are easy to pick out as they appear. The gray stone path looks fairly bleak, but the character brings some personality to the scene with his unruly hair, goggles perched on his head, and a gun with a glowing front end. The equipment on his back makes him look as though he hauled half the laboratory outside for a field test. His design gets the joke across right away, while the white coat also makes him easy to follow against the dark background when you’re judging the distance to an obstacle.

Agent Action is easy to get the hang of, but a run can still keep you busy when you’re trying to take out enemies, grab collectibles, and keep an eye on the road all at once. The most satisfying moments come when you clear a spike column and deal with the next target smoothly, because your inputs start working together instead of feeling rushed. When you make a mistake, you can usually tell whether you jumped too early or got distracted, which gives you something specific to improve on the next run. For now, help the scientist make it a little farther; he can explain why he took a gun out of the laboratory when he gets back.
